She was born in Fukushima and raised in Japan. After she finished her education she moved to NYC in 1993 and has worked as a tailor, dressmaker, costume producer (worked extensively for an artist Mariko Mori, and for various theater productions) and also as a designer ever since. In 1995, she launched her own label, "MOTOMIMI". In 2005, she opened her boutique, "Mimi's Closet", which carried her brands in NOHO and Astoria, NY. In 2011, she traveled back and forth between the U.S. and Japan, involving in many projects to support the country’s recovery from Tohoku earth quake and Fukushima nuclear disaster that ravaged the region on March 11, 2011. Currently, while she's exploring her new ideas as a visual artist, she is working on many deferent fashion projects and continues to advocate anti-nuclear/anti-war movement.
